A selection of articles by Martin Motes and excerpts from books written by Martin and Mary Motes.
Rhynocosytlis coelestis, an article by Martin R. Motes, Ph.D.
The first in a historic set of articles Dr. Motes wrote in the late 1980s and early 1990s about the history of vanda hybridizing. An interesting perspective on the past of vanda hybridizing--and a preview of what Motes Orchids' breeding program would later accomplish. First published in the American Orchid Society Bulletin. Some of the material was later adapted into Vandas: Their Botany, History and Culture.
The fourth article focuses on then new pink hybrids. Of particular historical interest is an insert provided by the AOS to air the argument advanced by Dr. David Grove that there was little benefit to experimenting with new bloodlines and species and only "hardy souls" would persist. Luckily Dr. Motes ignored that piece of advice!
An article on Vanda garayi (formerly Ascocentrum garayi). A parent of several of our currently available hybrids, including Vanda Alan Ashe Patterson, Vanda cristata x V. garayi, V. garayi x Vanda miniata 'Mary Motes' CHM/AOS, and V. Alan Ashe Patterson x V. curvifolia “Farmlife Rose” AM/AOS, and involved in the parentage of many more, including Vanda Motes Goldpiece (winner of the silver medal at the 18th World Orchid Conference, Motes Orchids also won the gold medal), Vanda Bartholomew Motes, Vanda Motes Burning Sands, and Vanda Miami Mandarin.
